Cardboard boat races

We made another early start this morning to watch the Cardboard Boat Races at Lake Sacajawea and get a good parking spot.  We did good and only had a little over a block to walk.  There were lots of vendors this year, this is looking North and there were even more to the South.
There were thirty boats entered this year in every size and shape you could imagine.  After I took this picture we had about forty minutes until the start so we went to the food booths and ate.  I had the Russian meat pockets and they were pretty good.  They also had one filled with blackberry jam and I had to try it also, I am glad I did because it was good.
This is as they were lining up for the first heat.  The big one in back was in the next heat race.
They are off for the start of the first heat race.  The catamaran with the orange crew ended  up winning this heat.
Some of them barely got away from the start line before they sank!
There were some pretty cute boats our there and usually there was a traffic jam at the pylons as most of them did not turn too well.
When they got close together some splashing usually took place.
Which caused some of them to sink as they were not waterproofed inside.
This is the winner of the paddle wheel division and one of my favorites.  They had catapults and were launching small planes off it as they raced.  There were only two entries in this class and the other one broke down and sank just past the start line.  A two man canoe shaped boat was the overall winner.
The firemen had a golf challenge set up that we enjoy watching so we stopped on the way out and I took a few pictures.
The Robotics Club booth caught my attention as we were going through the vendors, I had to stop and talk to the leaders for a while.
